“I shot and killed people because they were Black,” Gendron said. “I did a terrible thing that day. I know I can’t take it back, but I wish I could, and I don’t want anyone to be inspired by me and what I did.”
The shooting occurred at Tops Friendly Markets in a predominantly Black area of Buffalo. Nine of the 10 people killed were Black, and the tenth was a White woman. Gendron admitted that he was motivated by what he had read online and acted out of hate.
