Missouri Man Indicted on Nine Counts Carrying Life in Prison for Allegedly Holding Woman Captive in Basement

A Missouri man accused of holding a woman captive in his basement until she escaped last year has been indicted on nine counts that carry life in prison, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced Tuesday.

Timothy M. Haslett, 40, of Excelsior Springs, was indicted on one count of rape, four counts of sodomy, two counts of second-degree assault, one count of kidnapping, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The indictment follows a months-long investigation into the alleged abduction of a woman who was held captive in Haslett’s basement for several months. The woman, who has not been identified, was able to escape in October 2020.

At the news conference, Thompson said the grand jury’s decision to indict Haslett was based on the evidence presented to them. He also said that the victim’s courage in coming forward and providing testimony was instrumental in the indictment.

“We are grateful for the bravery of the victim in coming forward and providing testimony to the grand jury,” Thompson said. “We are committed to seeking justice for her and all victims of sexual assault.”

Haslett is currently being held in the Clay County Jail without bond. If convicted, he could face life in prison. Live reports on the case will be provided on KCTV5 at 4, 5, and 6 p.m.
