Eight people were injured after a U-Haul van struck them in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood on Monday morning, according to authorities. Two of the victims are in critical condition.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) stopped the van bearing an Arizona license plate and the operator was taken into custody at Bay Ridge Parkway and 5th Avenue before noon. The NYPD said in a statement that the U-Haul box truck had evaded a traffic stop near the intersection, for reasons still unknown.
Emergency response crews had rushed to the area after the truck reportedly slammed into people at the intersection of Bay Ridge Parkway and 5th Avenue. Three of the injured were on mopeds and at least one was a pedestrian, a man in his 30s, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter said.
The NYPD has confirmed that the suspect allegedly operating the box truck is in custody as of 12 p.m. The investigation is ongoing and the motive behind the incident is still unknown.
