Two Black Quarterbacks to Make History in Super Bowl Sunday Showdown, Inspiring Dreams Across the Country

This Sunday, history will be made when two Black quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, face off in the Super Bowl for the first time. This matchup marks a significant milestone in the NFL, as only eight Black quarterbacks have ever started a Super Bowl since the 1950s.

Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl more than three decades ago, is excited for the historic matchup. He believes that it will inspire young people across the country to pursue their dreams.

The NFL has had to grapple with the lack of Black coaches and figures in leadership positions, and its failure to institute policies to break these barriers. If Hurts leads his team to victory, he will be the fourth Black quarterback to do so, following Washington’s Doug Williams in 1988, Mahomes in 2020 and the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson in 2013.

The impact of having two top Black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl is not lost on Williams, who is the Washington Commanders’ senior advisor to team president Jason Wright. He believes that this matchup will help to break down racial stigmas against Black quarterbacks that have been present since the 1950s.
