Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that he had ordered a U.S. fighter jet to shoot down an unidentified object flying high over the Yukon. This action was taken a day after the U.S. took similar action over Alaska.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) had detected the object flying at a high altitude over northern Canada. After U.S. and Canadian military aircraft were scrambled, a U.S. F-22 successfully shot the object down.

Trudeau said he had spoken with President Joe Biden, who had also ordered the downing of an unidentified object over remote Alaska on Friday. Trudeau tweeted, “I ordered the take down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace.”

Maj. Olivier Gallant, a NORAD spokesman, said Canadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object. He added that NORAD is continuing recovery efforts off the coast of South Carolina for a Chinese spy.

The downing of the unidentified object is the latest in a series of military actions taken by the U.S. and Canada in response to increased activity in the region. It is unclear what the object was or where it came from, but both nations are committed to protecting their airspace.
