A 16-year-old girl has been killed in a suspected shark attack while swimming in the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia, police said Saturday.
Acting Inspector Paul Robinson from Western Australia Police told a press briefing that the girl had jumped from her jet ski into the water to swim with a pod of dolphins that had been spotted nearby. Emergency personnel provided medical assistance to her at the scene but she died.
Inspector Robinson said it was not clear what type of shark had attacked the girl, but local media reports have speculated that it could have been a bull shark. He added that the family of the victim were not present at the time of the incident, but her friends were.
“As you can imagine this is an extremely traumatic incident for anyone to witness so obviously we’re offering counselling services to anyone who did witness it or is affected by the incident,” he said.
The incident has sparked fear among locals, with many now scared of a shark attack. The Western Australia Police have urged people to take extra caution when swimming in the Swan River. They have also advised people to check the latest shark sightings and beach closures before entering the water.
