Actor Charles Kimbrough, best known for his role as the straight-laced news anchor Jim Dial on the hit CBS sitcom “Murphy Brown”, passed away on January 11th in Culver City, California. His son confirmed the news to the Associated Press on Sunday.

Kimbrough played the role of Dial across the show’s 10 season run between 1988 and 1998, and earned an Emmy nomination in 1990 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He also reprised the role for three episodes in the 2018 reboot.

Kimbrough was born in New York City in 1936 and attended the University of Rochester. He began his career in the theater, earning a Tony nomination for his role in the 1971 Broadway production of “Company”. He also appeared in the original Broadway production of “The Robber Bridegroom” in 1976.

Kimbrough’s wife, actor Beth Howland, who played diner server Vera on the 1970s and ’80s CBS sitcom “Alice,” died in 2016.

Kimbrough’s death was first reported by The New York Times. He is survived by his son, Christopher Kimbrough.
