Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is just 36 points away from breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

James finished with 27 points in the Lakers’ 131-126 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans Saturday night, leaving him needing just 36 points to overtake Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points. Lakers forward Anthony Davis had a team-high 34 points and 14 rebounds in the game.

James has been averaging 30.0 points per game this season and, assuming he does not miss any games in the interim, he would be on pace to break the record Thursday night at home against Milwaukee.

The Smoothie King Center in New Orleans was filled with cheers whenever James touched the ball, but fans will have to wait a little longer for the record to be broken.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points has stood for nearly 39 years, the Lakers great overtaking Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 31,419 points in 1984. It is now up to James to break the record and become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
