Italian fugitive and convicted murderer Edgardo Greco, 63, was arrested this week in Saint-Etienne, France, after 16 years on the run. Greco, who was associated with the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta, was convicted in absentia in 1991 for the double homicide of brothers Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo. He had been working under the alias Paolo Dimitrio as a pizza chef at the Caffe Rossini Italian restaurant.
The arrest was made after a coordinated effort between Italian and French authorities. Greco was handed a life prison sentence in absentia in Italy on charges including a double-homicide and attempted murder during a “mafia war” in the early 1990s.
This arrest comes two weeks after the sensational arrest of Sicilian Cosa Nostra superboss Matteo Messina Denaro at a health clinic in Palermo, Sicily. Greco is the latest mobster to be apprehended by Italian anti-Mafia police.
Interpol, the international police agency, said in a statement that the arrest was the result of “close cooperation between INTERPOL and its member countries.” The statement went on to say that the arrest “demonstrates the commitment of INTERPOL to helping its member countries bring fugitives to justice, no matter how long they have been on the run.”
Greco is currently being held in France and is awaiting extradition to Italy. He is expected to face trial for his crimes in the Italian court system.
