The FBI is investigating a claim made by Navy veteran Richard Osthoff that Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., misused funds from an online fundraising campaign intended to cover lifesaving surgery for Osthoff’s service dog.
Osthoff told NBC News on Wednesday that he had been on the phone with the FBI and provided all requested records and information, including text messages dating back to his exchanges with Santos in 2016 about raising $3,000 for his dog Sapphire.
The US Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York is leading the investigation into Santos’ finances. Osthoff said he cooperated with the agents’ requests, including handing over his text message exchanges with Santos.
When asked by reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Santos did not respond to questions about the matter. A spokesperson for the US attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York declined to comment.
Osthoff said, “I turned over all my text messages and I’m in the process of turning over everything related to the GoFundMe campaign.” The FBI has yet to comment on the investigation.
