More than 1,200 flights were canceled and many more delayed on Tuesday as a severe ice storm continued to hit parts of the South and central United States. According to airplane tracking website FlightAware, more than 1,200 flights had been canceled within the US and more than 1,600 delayed by 11 a.m. ET.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field were particularly affected, with more than 500 flights to or from the former and nearly 125 to or from the latter canceled or delayed. Southwest Airlines, based in Dallas, reported more than 300 canceled flights and nearly 100 delayed flights.

The storm, which began Monday, caused numerous auto collisions in Austin, Texas, with at least one fatality according to the Austin Fire Department.

The icy conditions have caused significant disruption to air travel, with deicing procedures being carried out on aircraft at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

The National Weather Service has warned that the storm is expected to continue into Wednesday, with further disruption to air travel likely. The service has advised people to stay off the roads and to take extra care when travelling.
