Two Black Quarterbacks Set to Make History in Super Bowl LVII, as Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts Battle for the Lombardi Trophy

The stage is set for history to be made in Super Bowl LVII on February 12th, as two Black quarterbacks will face off for the first time in the championship game. Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts will make history as the first-ever Black starting quarterbacks to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Mahomes, who became the third Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl in 2020, is aiming to become the first Black quarterback in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls. If the Eagles beat the Chiefs, Hurts would become the fourth Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, joining Mahomes, Doug Williams and Russell Wilson.

Doug Williams was the first Black quarterback to start and win the Super Bowl, leading the then-Washington Redskins to victory in 1988. Russell Wilson was the second, leading the Seattle Seahawks to victory in 2013. Mahomes was the third Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl in 2020 when he led the Chiefs over the San Francisco 49ers.

The matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will be a historic one, as two Black quarterbacks battle it out for the Lombardi Trophy. It will be the first time in Super Bowl history that two Black quarterbacks will be starting for each side.
