A man accused of attacking former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer last year expressed regret on Friday that he didn’t do more. David DePape called KTVU’s Amber Lee from the San Francisco County Jail on the same day the attack footage was released, with what he called “an important message for everyone in America.”
DePape said he had gathered “names and addresses” of people he believed were “systematically and deliberately” destroying American freedom and liberty and said he wanted to “have a heart-to-heart chat about their bad behavior.” He added that he should have been “better prepared,” but did not mention Pelosi by name.
The call followed the public release of police body camera footage capturing the incident. DePape shared a stunning lack of remorse for the violence during the call. “I want to apologize to everyone. What I did was really bad,” he said.
The attack occurred in the early morning hours of May 16, 2020, when DePape allegedly entered the Pelosi’s home and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer. He was arrested shortly after and charged with attempted murder, aggravated mayhem, and first-degree burglary.
DePape is currently being held in San Francisco County Jail and is due back in court on April 30th. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
