The Republican National Committee (RNC) is set to decide the fate of its chairperson on Friday, as the party faces a bitter leadership feud. The high-profile contest to lead the GOP through the 2024 presidential election is being contested by current RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel and challenger Harmeet Dhillon, a Trump attorney.

McDaniel, who is seeking her fourth term as chair, has the support of over 100 members. However, her bid for reelection has been complicated by the endorsement of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for Dhillon. The Dhillon team had DeSantis as one of her endorsements on her website, but then an a short time later took it down.

The challenge from Dhillon has featured allegations of chronic misspending, mismanagement and even religious bigotry against Dhillon’s Sikh faith. Rebel factions inside the MAGA movement have lined up behind Dhillon, citing the need for “new blood” in the RNC.

The election comes after three substandard election cycles in a row, with the most recent in 2022 being the worst. The outcome of the RNC chair election will be a major indicator of the direction of the Republican Party going into the 2024 presidential election. The vote will be held in a secret ballot at the committee’s winter meeting in Southern California.
