A Virginia teacher was shot by her 6-year-old student after she sent a text to a loved one warning that the boy was armed and school administrators were failing to act, according to a source close to the situation.
Abigail Zwerner, a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, sent the text about an hour before she was shot on January 6. In the text, she expressed her frustration that administrators were not taking action after she and other teachers reported that the student had threatened to beat up another child.
Diane Toscano, a defense attorney representing Zwerner, said in a news conference on Wednesday that Zwerner and several other teachers made reports between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. on the day of the shooting. However, the school did not act on the report.
At around 12:30 p.m., a second unidentified teacher went to school administrators and said that the student had a gun in his backpack. Shortly after, Zwerner was shot.
The 6-year-old student has been charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Zwerner is currently in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
