American skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin has made history, breaking Lindsey Vonn’s record for most World Cup wins in women’s skiing.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist secured her 83rd career World Cup victory on Tuesday, surpassing her former American teammate Vonn’s 82 wins. Shiffrin’s record-breaking day began with a time of 58.72 in the first run of the giant slalom, and she capped off the day with a second-run time of 1:01.89.

The victory puts Shiffrin only three wins away from matching the overall record of 86 wins, held by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark. Stenmark’s record is the most wins in both men’s and women’s skiing.

Shiffrin finished 0.45 seconds ahead of 2021 world giant slalom champion Lara Gut-Behrami in second place. When asked to describe her record-breaking day, Shiffrin said, “It’s a huge honor to be able to break Lindsey’s record. She was an incredible athlete and an inspiration to me and so many other skiers.”

The victory marks a major milestone for Shiffrin, who is now the most decorated female skier in history. With three more wins, she could become the most decorated skier of all time.
