At a news conference Monday, Sheriff Robert Luna praised the heroic actions of Brandon Tsay, who confronted the suspect in the lobby of a dance hall run by his family, the Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra.

Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese described the scene at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio as “chaos and extensive carnage” when officers arrived. The gunman had entered the studio and began shooting during a Lunar New Year celebration.

Sheriff Luna thanked Tsay for his actions, which he believes saved many lives. Investigators were able to track down the suspect by tracing the semi-automatic weapon he was holding, which yielded his name and description.

The shooting has left the community in shock, and authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack. The victims of the shooting have not yet been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.
