A heroic act of bravery was captured on video Saturday night in Alhambra, California, when 26-year-old Brandon Tsay disarmed a gunman who had just opened fire at a nearby Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park. The shooter had killed 10 people and injured 10 others.
Tsay told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he heard the sound of metal in the lobby of Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio, a dance hall in Alhambra, and turned to see an Asian man holding a gun. Tsay said he realized he needed to disarm the man or else everyone in the building would have been killed.
Harrowing video obtained exclusively by NBC News captured the men tussling in what appears to be an empty lobby in the dance hall. The weapon has been described as a semi-automatic. The man, dressed in dark clothing and a hat, walks out of the picture and about 30 seconds later is seen struggling with Tsay as the two wrestle over the weapon. A shoving match ensues, and Tsay manages to take the gun away from the man.
Tsay’s brave actions have been praised by many, and he has been hailed as a hero for potentially preventing more carnage at the second dance hall. The Monterey Park shooter is now in police custody.
The Alhambra Police Department has not yet released a statement on the incident, but they are currently investigating the matter.
