Attorneys representing the family of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died three days after a “confrontation” with police during a traffic stop, said Monday that video of the stop was “violent” and “heinous” and likened it to the infamous footage of the Rodney King beating.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who viewed the footage along with Nichols’ family and other lawyers, said at a Monday press conference that the video was “appalling,” “deporable,” and “violent.”

Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis said in a statement that five officers involved in the traffic stop were terminated Friday, following an administrative investigation that found they violated department policies.

Nichols, a father, FedEx worker, and avid skateboarder, was hospitalized and died three days after he was stopped by Memphis police officers on Jan. 7. Attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, who are representing Nichols’ family, said they could not offer too many details of the video after viewing it with Memphis city officials.

The attorneys said the video showed an “unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating” reminiscent to the brutality Rodney King suffered at the hands of police officers. The family is now calling for justice for Nichols and an independent investigation into his death.
