The suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, was pronounced dead following a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday as police swarmed a white van in Torrance, about 30 miles from Monterey Park.
The shooting occurred at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, where Tran had previously frequented. The studio was hosting a Lunar New Year celebration at the time of the shooting.
Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo released a statement on Sunday, calling the shooting a “horrible tragedy.” He said, “The unimaginable happened in our community last evening.”
Authorities are still searching for a motive for the shooting. They are also investigating Tran’s background and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In a separate incident, an armed man showed up at a second dance studio in nearby Alhambra where authorities say a group of people wrestled a gun away from him. It is unclear if the two incidents are related.
