On Wednesday morning, a tragic incident occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, when a 26-year-old activist, Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, was shot and killed by law enforcement. The shooting occurred near a planned $90 million, 85-acre law enforcement training facility where opponents had camped out for months in an attempt to halt its construction.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that officers were performing a clearing operation to “identify people who were trespassing in the area” when they spotted someone in a tent in the woods. The officers gave verbal commands, but the person allegedly did not comply and shot a Georgia State Patrol Trooper. The officers returned fire and fatally shot the person, later identified as Manuel Esteban Paez Terán.
The mother of the slain activist said she feels angry and powerless as protests over the shooting erupted Saturday. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said that at least six people were arrested in the violence, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said “some” of those arrested “were found with explosives on them,” adding that a police patrol vehicle was set ablaze. Three local businesses were also damaged during the violence, which was limited to a roughly two-block radius.
The incident has sparked outrage and protests in the city of Atlanta, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate the shooting. The Georgia State Patrol Trooper who was shot is expected to make a full recovery.
