Three active-duty U.S. Marines were arrested and charged this week for their involvement in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The men, Micah Coomer, Joshua Abate and Dodge Dale Hellonen, all hold prominent military intelligence positions and have each been charged with knowingly entering a restricted building, two counts of disorderly conduct and parading or picketing inside the Capitol.
According to an FBI affidavit unsealed Thursday, the bureau identified the three men through footage of them walking through the Capitol together with hundreds of others. The FBI matched images of the men to photos posted to Coomer’s Instagram account, where he captioned one image “Glad to be apart” of the riot.
The complaint also says Coomer expressed support for the Boogaloo Bois, a far-right extremist group that advocates civil war. The FBI found that the three men spent about 52 minutes with other rioters attempting to block the transference of power from Donald Trump to now-President Joe Biden.
The three Marines are now facing four misdemeanor charges, including disorderly conduct in the Capitol building with the intent to impede Congress. The arrests are the latest in a line of current or former members of the military associated with the riot.
The FBI has been actively investigating the events of Jan. 6 and has so far arrested more than 300 people in connection with the riot. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected in the coming weeks.
