The Memphis Police Department (MPD) has announced the dismissal of five officers following an internal investigation into the death of Tyre Nichols, a Black driver who died three days after a traffic stop earlier this month.

MPD Chief C.J. Davis said in a statement that the investigation determined that the officers had violated multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid. The officers were identified by the department as Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith.

“Each officer charged was terminated from the Memphis Police Department,” Chief Davis said.

The incident occurred on January 7 when Nichols was stopped by Memphis Police. The officers involved in the arrest have been fired following the internal investigation.

The MPD has also announced that it will be conducting a review of its policies and procedures to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
