Early Sunday morning, tragedy struck the University of Alabama campus when a 23-year-old mother, Jamea Jonae Harris, was fatally shot. University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were arrested and charged with capital murder in connection to the shooting.

The incident occurred on the Strip, a student-oriented business district near the Tuscaloosa campus. According to Jack Kennedy, the shooting happened after Harris declined a man trying to flirt with her. Police responded to the shooting at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday and found Harris had been fatally shot.

Alabama men’s basketball coach Nate Oats said Monday the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide is going through “kind of a grieving process” after the incident. He said he spoke with Miles’ mother multiple times Sunday, and met with the team that night.

Miles was the only person connected to the University of Alabama involved in the shooting, authorities said. He has since been removed from the team. The investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released.
