Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Banks has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, seeking to fill the seat left open by outgoing Republican Sen. Mike Braun. Banks, who just won his fourth term in the House, is the first to enter what could be a crowded and competitive GOP primary for the open Senate seat in a reliably red state.
Banks is a Navy veteran and conservative who has taken a stance on hot-button social issues that have been at the center of the culture wars in recent years, including efforts to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
“That’s why I am running to represent our great state of Indiana in the United States Senate,” Banks wrote in a tweet Tuesday morning. “I’ve been on the front lines fighting for ‘America First’ policies in Congress,” Banks said in the digital ad announcing his Senate run, referencing former President Donald Trump’s agenda.
The Club for Growth has already started attacking one of his potential rivals, former Gov. Mitch Daniels, launching a 60-second digital ad last week. Other prominent candidates who have expressed interest in the seat include Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita and former Rep. Luke Messer.
