Ohio state Senator Matt Dolan announced his candidacy for the 2024 U.S. Senate race on Tuesday, becoming the first Republican to declare his candidacy for the seat currently held by Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown.

Dolan, who lost a raucous Republican Senate primary in Ohio last year, plans to challenge Brown, who has held the seat since 2006. Dolan is the owner of the Cleveland Guardians and a state senator.

In a voicemail to an Ohio GOP official on Sunday, Dolan said he would officially announce his candidacy this week. The official shared the voicemail with NBC News on the condition of anonymity.

Other Republicans looking at the race include Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Bernie Moreno, a businessman who briefly was a Senate candidate in 2022.
