On Saturday, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was attacked by anti-aircraft guided missiles from the north, according to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi. He said the attack was carried out by a mix of air-launched cruise missiles, sea-launched cruise missiles and guided missiles fired from aircraft. In total, the enemy made 28 launches of cruise missiles and 5 launches of guided aircraft missiles.
General Zaluzhnyi said that Ukrainian defense forces managed to intercept and destroy 18 cruise missiles and three guided aircraft missiles. He added that about two-thirds of the Russian missiles fired at Ukraine were intercepted.
The attack comes amid a bitter rift between Russia’s military chiefs and the head of a private mercenary group, the Wagner Group, which has been fighting in the region. On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced victory in a statement that made no mention of the mercenaries, despite the Wagner Group’s leader Yevgeny Prigozhin claiming two days earlier that troops from his irregular private army had seized control of the small salt-mining town of Soledar.
The attack on Kyiv is the latest in a series of escalations between Ukraine and Russia. The two countries have been locked in a conflict since 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula. The United Nations has repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
