Four University of Idaho students were found dead in a home near campus in November, and on Thursday, the suspect, Bryan Kohberger, appeared in an Idaho court for the second time.

Kohberger, 28, is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. He waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, with his defense team asking the court for time to prepare for the case.

According to a probable cause affidavit released last week, trash recovered from the Pennsylvania home of Kohberger’s family late last month and sent to the Idaho State Lab for DNA testing revealed that the “DNA profile obtained from the trash” matched a tan leather knife sheath found “laying on the bed” of one of the victims. The DNA in the trash “identified a male as not being excluded as the biological father” of the suspect whose DNA was found on the sheath.

One of Kohberger’s neighbors in Pullman, Washington, said the suspect spoke to him about the killings days after they occurred.

The investigation into the deaths of the four University of Idaho students is ongoing. Kohberger is due back in court in April.
