Six people were wounded in an unprovoked blade attack at Paris’ Gare du Nord train station Wednesday morning. The assailant was shot and wounded by police before any fatalities could occur.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin praised the swift intervention of police at the scene, saying the individual started attacking people with a knife at 6:45 a.m. local time. Several police officers opened fire, including a security agent working for rail operator SNCF. The individual was disarmed by off-duty police officers who were going home and by border police.
Darmanin said the unnamed assailant was currently “between life and death” in a hospital. The attack caused the train station to restrict access to one of the French capital’s major rail hubs.
The motive for the attack is still unknown and an investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released at this time.
The swift response of police officers at the scene is being praised for helping to prevent any fatalities. The Paris mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has also expressed her gratitude for the quick action of the police.
