Leaders of the Nassau County Republican Party on Wednesday called for Rep. George Santos, elected to represent New York’s 3rd Congressional District in November, to resign from office over his lies to voters and fabrications about his personal life.

Joseph Cairo, chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee, said at a news conference on Long Island that Santos had “deceived voters” and “disgraced the House of Representatives” with his “campaign of deceit, lies and fabrication.” Cairo called for Santos’ “immediate resignation.”

Cairo was joined by a slate of local party officials and, remotely from Washington, DC, Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, who also called for Santos to step down.

Santos, however, rebuffed the calls for his resignation. In a statement released Wednesday, he said he was “deeply sorry” for his lies and fabrications and that he was “committed to regaining the trust of the voters of New York’s 3rd Congressional District.”

The controversy surrounding Santos began when it was revealed that he had lied about his military service and his educational background. Santos had claimed to have served in the Navy and to have received a degree from Harvard University, when in fact he had never served in the military and had only attended Harvard for one semester.

The Nassau County Republican Party’s call for Santos’ resignation is the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued the congressman since his election in November. It remains to be seen whether Santos will heed the calls for his resignation or remain in office.
