Local Republican leaders in Nassau County, New York, have called for the immediate resignation of newly sworn-in U.S. Rep. George Santos. At a news conference Wednesday, Nassau County GOP Chairman Joe Cairo said Santos had “disgraced” the House of Representatives and was “not welcome” at Republican headquarters.
Cairo accused Santos of running a “campaign of deceit, lies and fabrication” in order to win his congressional seat. He said the party was calling for Santos’ immediate resignation.
Santos, a freshman lawmaker, recently admitted to lying about his background in order to win his seat. He had claimed to have served in the military, when in fact he had not. He also falsely claimed to have been a police officer, when he had only served as a security guard.
The announcement comes after elected officials, candidates and party officials from Long Island’s Nassau County Republican Party floated a “major announcement” about the “disgraced” freshman lawmaker.
The Nassau County Republican Committee has made it clear that they do not consider Santos to be one of their congresspeople. They have urged him to resign immediately. It is unclear at this time if Santos will comply with the party’s request.
