Residents of California were given a break from torrential rains on Wednesday as Northern California braced for more downpours. Flood alerts still impacted about 5 million Golden State residents Wednesday, though that’s down from about 30 million Tuesday.
The heaviest rains Wednesday were expected to fall on northern and coastal regions of the state. A powerful storm, among the latest to assault the West Coast, has turned streets into rivers and forced the closure of major roadways in California. At least 17 people have died since late last week in these California storms that show few signs of slowing up.
One of the victims of the storm is 5-year-old Kyle Doan, who is missing after his family’s SUV was swept away by floodwater in central California on Monday morning. His father, Brian Doan, recalled Wednesday that his son was encouraging his mother while they were still in the car.
“Don’t worry, Mommy,” the boy said. His father said that Kyle was not quite processing what was going on, but was calm while talking to his mother. Kyle’s mother is a special education teacher at the same school in the San Luis Obispo County village of San Miguel where he attends kindergarten.
The Doan family is still searching for Kyle and are asking for help from the public. The California Highway Patrol is also searching for the missing boy and have asked anyone with information to contact them.
