Authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have arrested a suspect believed to be linked to at least one of the five shootings at or near the homes or offices of several elected officials. The suspect is being held on unrelated charges, and police are awaiting the results of several outstanding search warrants filed in the investigation.
The shootings began on Monday and continued intermittently until Thursday, when shots were fired outside the downtown law offices of newly appointed state Sen. Antonio “Moe” Maestas. County Commissioner Debbie O’Malley Barboa, one of the six Democratic leaders whose homes or offices were targeted, said she won’t let the attacks stop her from doing her job.
“I can’t let this intimidate me from public service,” Barboa said Tuesday.
Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said in a press conference that detectives are still gathering evidence to build a strong case. “We’re just waiting to get a return on some of the information to ensure that everything we have, that the case we’re building is as strong as possible and to see what other aspects are involved,” Medina said.
At this time, police have not released the suspect’s name or any information about a possible motive. It is also unclear if they are looking for anyone else in connection with the shootings.
