Brazilian authorities have detained an estimated 1,500 people in connection with the attack on government buildings in the country’s capital Sunday by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The attack, which saw hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters storm the seats of power, trashing offices and drawing strong condemnation from the international community, has left the country reeling.

Bolsonaro had already left Brazil for the United States on Dec. 30, according to his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, who wrote in a post on her official Instagram that he was admitted on Monday for abdominal “discomfort” related to injuries from a 2018 knife attack during a political rally.

Brazil Minister of Justice Flávio Dino said Monday at a news conference that the 1,500 people detained include those formally arrested in the vandalism and those detained for questioning. Police stopped 40 buses as part of the response and broke down an encampment of pro-Bolsonaro supporters outside a military building.

The attack on Sunday has been widely condemned by the international community, with many calling for an end to the violence and a return to peaceful dialogue. Brazil is now facing the challenge of restoring order and ensuring that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
