President Joe Biden made a surprising statement Thursday afternoon, just minutes after his administration announced a program that expands the controversial public health restrictions of Title 42. The President said he does not like the policy, which has been used since March 2020 to swiftly expel migrants who cross the border illegally.

Today, President Biden will travel to El Paso, one of the busiest ports of entry, to meet with officials and other aid organizations. Accompanying him is Democratic Congresswoman Veronica Escobar of Texas, who will join him on the three hour visit.

In an interview with “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Rep. Escobar was asked what can be done to make sure the visit is more than just a photo op. She responded that the visit should be used to “listen to the people on the ground, the people who are living this reality every day.” She added that the President should use the visit to “understand the complexity of the situation and the need for comprehensive immigration reform.”

The President’s visit comes after he announced new border enforcement actions last week. Despite the administration’s public decrying of Title 42, it has repeatedly turned to the Trump-era policy as a tool to manage the spiraling situation at the border.

Rep. Escobar concluded her interview by saying that the visit should be used to “show the world that we are a compassionate nation that is capable of humanely managing our borders.” She added that the President should use the visit to “demonstrate that we are a nation of laws, but also of humanity.”
