Legendary Journalist and Founding Anchor of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Bernard Kalb Passes Away at Home in Maryland

Bernard Kalb, a long-time journalist and founding anchor of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” program, passed away on Sunday at his home in North Bethesda, Maryland. His family confirmed the news, citing complications from a recent fall as the cause of death.

Kalb was a veteran correspondent and former CBS News journalist, having traveled the globe for more than three decades as a correspondent covering world affairs for CBS News, NBC News and The New York Times. He was the first anchor of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” program from 1992 to 1998.

In a statement, Kalb’s family called him the “ultimate reporter” who had “boundless curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.” His daughter also praised him as an important figure in journalism, noting his pioneering efforts to hold the profession to account.

CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht also hailed Kalb as a pioneering journalist. “Bernard Kalb was a giant in the world of journalism,” Licht said. “He was a mentor to many of us and a friend to all.”

Kalb’s brother, Marvin Kalb, a former CBS News reporter, told The Washington Post that Kalb died at his home in the Washington suburbs following complications from a fall. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and four grandchildren.
