At least one person was killed and 41 injured after two subway trains collided in Mexico City on Saturday.
The accident occurred on Line 3 of the capital’s Metro system between the Potrero and La Raza stations. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said on her Twitter account that one woman was killed and 57 people were injured, 16 of whom were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Dozens of police and soldiers swarmed into the nearby subway stations, while ambulances and rescue teams arrived to treat the injured. Edgar Montiel, an electrician who was on one on the trains, said he felt lucky because he had decided at the last minute to switch to the other train.
Late in the afternoon, the mayor said 26 of the injured had been released. The cause of the crash is still unknown and is being investigated.
The Mexico City Metro system is the second largest in North America and serves over 1.6 billion passengers annually. It is one of the most important public transportation systems in the country. This is the second major accident to occur on the Metro system in the last two years. In 2019, a train derailed in the same line, killing one person and injuring 41.
