Residents of Enoch, Utah were left in shock Wednesday after eight family members, including five children, were found dead from gunshot wounds in a home in the small city.

The victims were discovered when police did a welfare check at the residence, according to a statement by city officials. The Iron County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating the deaths as a “multi-homicide” but did not provide any further details or a potential motive for the killings.

Rob Dotson, the city manager of Enoch, said the community was sent reeling by news of the eight bodies and that the deceased – all members of one family – were well known in the southern Utah town.

“Many of us have served with them in church, in the community and gone to school with these individuals,” Dotson said in a statement. The five children in the family attended schools in the Iron County School District, officials said in a letter sent to parents.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the deaths and is asking anyone with information to come forward. The office has not released any further details or a potential motive for the killings.
