Residents in central California are bracing for the impacts of a powerful storm, known as a bomb cyclone, that is hitting the state’s coast. Wind gusts have already reached hurricane-force in some areas, and the strongest winds and heaviest rain are expected to move onshore this evening.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to allow for a quick response and to aid in cleanup from another powerful storm just days earlier. The National Weather Service is expecting a several hourslong period of moderate to heavy rain and strong winds Wednesday evening.
State officials have warned residents in Northern California to stay off the roads and to stay informed by signing up for updates from emergency officials about downed trees. Crews have been rushing to clear storm drains and people are fortifying their homes in preparation for flooding and power outages.
Peak wind gusts along the central California coast so far have been 85 mph in Nicasio Hills and 77 mph in Los Gatos. Residents are urged to take precautions and to stay safe during this storm.
