In a rare display of bipartisanship, President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) took a ride in the Beast, the armored presidential limo, to an event in Covington, Kentucky, on Wednesday to announce more than $2 billion in investments from a bipartisan infrastructure law.
The funding will go towards replacing the Brent Spence Bridge, which connects Kentucky and Ohio and was built in 1963, and improving the highway system in the area. The bridge is considered functionally obsolete.
The event also marks the first time Biden and McConnell have appeared together since Biden took office in January. The two leaders have had a contentious relationship in the past, but Biden has made it a priority to work with Republicans on infrastructure and other issues. McConnell has also indicated he is open to working with the president on infrastructure, though he has been critical of Biden’s proposed tax hikes to pay for it.
