A police chief in Pennsylvania was killed in the line of duty Monday while chasing a suspect wanted on a weapons-related probation violation, authorities said.
Justin McIntire, the police chief of Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot in the head while pursuing a suspect on Monday. Allegheny County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns said that the suspect, 28-year-old Aaron Lamont Swan, was initially encountered by McIntire during a traffic stop on Sunday night.
The suspect fled in a carjacked vehicle when Pittsburgh detectives spotted it, and opened fire on the pursuing detectives, killing McIntire and wounding another officer. The suspect then crashed the vehicle and ran into a wooded area and toward a housing development, where he was shot and killed by police.
McIntire was a 20-year veteran of the Brackenridge Police Department, and had served as police chief since 2017. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Kearns said that the officers involved in the pursuit and shooting of the suspect were being placed on administrative leave, and that an investigation into the incident was ongoing. He also expressed his condolences to McIntire’s family and the Brackenridge Police Department.
“Chief McIntire made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” Kearns said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Brackenridge community.”
