Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was sworn in for his second term on Tuesday, delivering a speech that positioned Florida as a model for the rest of the country and drew support from Republicans nationwide.

In his 15-minute address, DeSantis criticized the federal government and Democratic-run states, and praised Florida as a “citadel for freedom” and a place “where ‘woke’ goes to die.” He highlighted the inflation rate, the federal government’s response to COVID-19, and the migrant crisis at the southern border, all frequent criticisms of President Biden’s tenure by Republicans.

DeSantis’ speech has sparked speculation that he may be a potential 2024 GOP presidential contender, as he has become the leading alternative to former President Donald Trump. He made no mention of a potential presidential bid, but instead positioned his administration as a bulwark against Democratic leadership at the state and federal level.

“Now it’s often said that our federalist constitutional system with 50 states able to pursue their own unique policies represents a laboratory of democracy,” DeSantis said. “Well, if that’s the case, then Florida is the model laboratory.”

DeSantis’ speech has been met with widespread support from Republicans nationwide, who view him as a potential leader of the party in the 2024 presidential election. His speech has also been praised for its focus on Florida’s successes, and for its criticism of the federal government and Democratic-run states.
