On Monday morning, a dramatic rescue unfolded on the Pacific Coast Highway in San Mateo County, California. Two adults and two children, ages 4 and 9, were rescued from a Tesla that had plunged 250 feet off a cliff near the Devil’s Slide.

The car was traveling southbound on the Pacific Coast Highway when it went over the cliff at Devil’s Slide, south of the Tom Lantos tunnel, and landed near the water’s edge below, according to the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit. Battalion chief Brian Pottenger said the car appeared to have “flipped several times.”

As crews were lowered down to the crash site, they were able to see movement in the front seat, through their binoculars, meaning someone was alive. Photos of the scene showed the Tesla’s demolished body wedged between the cliff and the surf.

The four occupants of the car miraculously survived the fall, and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the two adults were in serious condition, while the two children were in stable condition.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Devil’s Slide area is known for its treacherous curves and has been the site of numerous wrecks in the past.
