More than 2,000 protesters gathered at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, the first day the building reopened to tourists since the pandemic began in 2020. The reopening comes just three days before the second anniversary of the deadly Jan. 6 attack.

Ex-Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund, who was chief during the attempted insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, has written in an upcoming book that his former agency “is not in a better place or on a readier footing” following the deadly events of the Capitol riot. Sund’s book, “Courage Under Fire: Under Siege and Outnumbered 58 to 1 on January 6,” is out Tuesday, giving his inside story of the Capitol siege.

Sund wrote that the “biggest intelligence failure” happened within the U.S. Capitol Police itself. He said that stopping that may take more than better barriers and planning. Sund also recalled a tense call with Pentagon leaders and his description of failures both within and outside of his own former agency.

In the book, Sund said that “politicians on both sides need to start thinking about how words matter and start finding a way to heal this place.” He added that the Capitol Police is still not in a better place or on a readier footing two years after the events of Jan. 6.

The reopening of the Capitol to tourists is a reminder of the events that took place two years ago. Sund’s book offers an inside look at the Capitol siege and his thoughts on how to prevent similar events from occurring in the future.
