On Monday night, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during a game in Cincinnati. Fans were in “confused awe, not knowing what happened,” according to Buffalo Bills fan Andrew Irlbacher, who was in the stadium. Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
In the weeks leading up to the incident, Hamlin had been focused on raising money to give children from his hometown toys for Christmas. On December 14th, he created a GoFundMe campaign to “positively impact children who have been hardest hit by the pandemic.” Donations made to the campaign were to help with the purchasing of toys for those children, and toys were distributed on December 22nd to a daycare center.
The response to Hamlin’s campaign was overwhelming. Within hours of his collapse, millions of dollars had been donated to the fundraiser. It’s unclear to CBS News just how much money had been raised prior to the toy distribution, but the support for Hamlin has been tremendous.
“He’s a strong man, so, he’s doing his job, you know – we just gotta do our job and pray for him,” Irlbacher said. The Buffalo Bills organization has also released a statement expressing their support for Hamlin and his family. The latest update on Hamlin’s condition has not been released, but the outpouring of support from fans and the community has been heartwarming.
