As the House of Representatives continues to deadlock over the speaker vote, Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 2 in the House GOP leadership, has made clear his support for current House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy. Sources close to Scalise say he plans to run for the job if McCarthy drops out of the race.
Rep.-elect Robert Garcia, D-Calif., whose swearing in to Congress was delayed Tuesday due to the deadlocked House speaker vote, tweeted about a collection of memorabilia that he wanted to take his oath on, including a comic book.
What is less clear is what Scalise will do if the race continues to drag out on Tuesday and goes to multiple ballots. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia chastised fellow Republicans who opposed McCarthy for speaker, noting that Jordan is supporting McCarthy and has said he wants to be chair of the House Judiciary Committee.
Scalise has rejected pleas by hardliners to mount a challenge to the California Republican, all while taking steps to avoid being seen as plotting McCarthy’s demise.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the speaker position on Tuesday. It is unclear what will happen if the race continues to drag out and goes to multiple ballots. It is also unclear whether Scalise will seek to maneuver his way into the speaker’s office if the stalemate persists.
