Four people have been killed and three critically injured in a midair collision between two helicopters in Australia. The crash occurred on Monday afternoon near the Sea World theme park in Main Beach, a northern beach on the Gold Coast.

According to Queensland Police Inspector Gary Worrell, one of the helicopters appeared to have been taking off and the other landing when they collided. Emergency services had difficulty accessing the sand bank where the helicopters crashed, located not far from the coast.

“Those two aircraft, when collided, have crash landed on the sand bank just out from Sea World Resort,” Worrell said at a news conference.

The crash drew emergency aid from beachgoers who were enjoying the water during the southern summer. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims. Our thoughts are with the families of those affected by this tragedy.
