A 19-year-old man from Wells, Maine has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault in connection with an attack on three New York City police officers in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
The attack occurred shortly after 10 p.m. at West 52nd Street and Eighth Avenue, just outside high-security checkpoints that celebrants had to pass through. The suspect was wielding a machete, and three officers were injured in the attack.
Trevor Bickford was taken into custody and is facing two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted assault. A high-ranking police source told CBS New York that Bickford was placed on the list after his aunt reported that he had been radicalized online and expressed a desire to travel overseas and join Islamic extremists.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has not yet indicated when Bickford will be arraigned, citing a number of factors. The investigation is ongoing and further details are expected to be released in the coming days.
The attack on the officers has been met with shock and outrage from the public, and the NYPD is continuing to investigate the incident.
