A person of interest has been taken into custody in Pennsylvania in connection with the slayings of four University of Idaho students, law enforcement sources said Friday.

The killings of Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20, in the early morning hours of November 13 shocked the small college town of Moscow, Idaho, which had not seen a murder since 2015.

Kristi Goncalves, the mother of Kaylee Goncalves, expressed her frustration in an interview aired on NBC’s TODAY show Thursday, saying that the Moscow Police Department had done a poor job communicating with families. She also said her family learned graphic details of her daughter’s autopsy when a woman from the coroner’s office called and asked her 17-year-old daughter if she wanted to know the findings.

The Moscow Police Department said in a news release Thursday that they are sorting through tens of thousands of registered vehicles that fit the criteria of one spotted near the residence the night of the attacks. They said they are “confident that the occupant or occupants of that vehicle have information that’s critical to this investigation.”

The Latah County coroner Cathy Mabbutt has also been giving interviews, which has further frustrated the grieving families.

The investigation is ongoing.
